Basketball and Poetry

I posted on FB yesterday that I had a new favorite poem. Ron Whitehead had written it and shared it on his FB.

I suppose with UK Basketball set to start SEC play this Saturday against Alabama, and a Ron Whitehead poem on my mind, it’s no wonder a poem of my own came to mind—

I wrote that back in 2021. I was inspired by Ron’s book of basketball poems Blistered Asphalt on Dixie Highway.

If you’re into b-ball, I recommend it. You can find it on Amazon or finishinglinepress.com.

I’m sure hoping the Wildcats can pull it together in these next few months. Regardless, I bleed blue, so win or lose, I’ll be rooting for them. To this day I still like a good dunk from one of the Cats more than anything. I was never able to do it myself, though I tried and tried and tried.

My senior year of high school, ‘85-‘86, my future father-in-law Rusty Albin was my P.E. teacher. Darn near daily, he let me try dunking—unsuccessfully—over and over there in the OCHS gym.

No, I didn’t know at the time that I would end up marrying his daughter Stephanie. Lol! Funny how things work out, isn’t it?

Here’s to things working out. Cheers!
